I've found that many Irish dislike Americans, but still retain a subtle kinship with them, it's weaker than the affection most Irish would have for our European neighbours, but stronger than the apathy they would have for any peoples further afield. The odd time you'll find some who, like himself, don't seem to have it.</description>

If you want depressing realism on what’s happened since, David McWilliam’s &lt;a href="http://www.davidmcwilliams.ie/Articles/view.asp?ArticleID=384" rel="nofollow"&gt;take&lt;/a&gt; is probably as good as any.</description>
