He’s Irish, just with a strange anti american streak.

I’ve found that many Irish dislike Americans, but still retain a subtle kinship with them, it’s weaker than the affection most Irish would have for our European neighbours, but stronger than the apathy they would have for any peoples further afield. The odd time you’ll find some who, like himself, don’t seem to have it.

It was finally sinking in when my boss ran in, actually jubilant at the time, thinking that it was nothing but small, symbolic blow against American superiority.

Hmm? Where was your boss from?

If you want depressing realism on what’s happened since, David McWilliam’s take is probably as good as any.
