Blogroll highlights

I track 167 feeds on Bloglines. You can see them all on my public page. I’ve slowly been arranging them into folders. If you take a look you’ll see that I’m attempting multiple categorization types at once (for the record: time of day, volume, relationship, topic, length of posts and duration of relevance). You’ll also notice that I’m only about half way.

I idly intend to post a review of any of these sites that I think you might want to add to your blogroll, criteria being a) it’s worth reading and b) it’s obscure enough that it’s possible you haven’t seen it, or at least haven’t seen it often enough to consider adding to your blogroll.

It’s also a partial admission that I’m lazy and slow, and that more of my time is spent reading the internet, instead of creating the internet.

Anyway, before I do get around to actually writing these feed reviews, here are a couple sites and posts I really want to share now:

randsinrepose
Go read Trickle Theory, one of his most entertaining and relevant posts. He doesn’t post very often, so he makes an excellent guest in your blogroll.
The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs
Sometimes crude, sometimes wildly offtopic, always funny (very funny, crazy funny), and, perversely enough, always has tidbits of tech news I haven’t seen anywhere else yet. He’s pretty prolific, but an easy read. You have to believe though.
Waiter Rant
You do read him, don’t you? The ultimate “my daily life is interesting” blogger
Dwindling in Unbelief
A regular reminder of how fallible the Bible is. It might eventually become monotonous, but right now, it’s pretty entertaining.

Random posts on this blog will be vaguely interesting to techie internet people.
Non techie internet people would probably be better off with reddit.com. Non internet techie people are probably called “Cobol programmers” and would not be reading this anyway.

The post where I explain the difference between vague and random hasn’t been written yet.

Wow, that’s a sharp reminder of how fragmented the blog world is. The stuff I have in common with you is our mutual friends, and that’s it.

I read Tim Bray and Joel Spolsky now and then, but of my 37 feed subscriptions, things I read consistently—since, for me, the only reason to subscribe to something is if you’re prepared to read it as they post things, otherwise an entry in del.icio.us is good enough—we share nothing else.

I like your links; I especially love the “Como estan ustedes amigos!” from the waiter being answered with swearing, because it’s a bit of local colour that would have provoked a fist fight in peninsular Spanish . 1

(… because you only use “ustedes” with people you expect a certain respect from in Spain, and swearing in response is very much not that respect. If swearing is a possibility, that’s what “vosotros” is for.)

It would be handy if Share Your OPML let you do a user to user comparison.

I tend to disagree with your reasoning that you have to read each article, placing them sites in delicious still requires you to make a decision about when to visit them. I prefer to have Bloglines “summarize” what needs to be “visited” and therefore let me process all these sites with minimal thought.

I use Bloglines for in a number of ways, so I don’t really see it as a big inbox of things I have to read.
I use it to remember people who don’t update often enough for me to visit their site regularly.

Everything else I tend to skim, I skim the articles of sites that write well enough and sparingly enough, and skim the headlines of sites that report every last news item and press release. Having the latter sites in a folder in Bloglines, grouped by type, means I spot and ignore the dupes pretty easily.

There’s a another type, for the sites that truly have an overwhelming amount of news, like digg, reddit, BBC news or engadget. These sites I still visit once or twice a day, but there’s no way I can add them to Bloglines. I really need them to highlight the most important items, trying to skim all the items in chronological order in a feed reader fries my brain rather quickly. I really wish the gawker blogs and their ilk would switch to a newspaper format, with stories moving through the front page at different speeds.

Oh my, did I just do an AOL?

Forgot that blog was in there, I can barely remember why I added it. I only ever look at me updated feeds, so any feed I tossed in that doesn’t update tends to sit there. I think it’s a left over from the research days for my current work project.

Still, now we know that your “Get mal in trouble” radar is still working.

I want to read each article of the sites I’ve subscribed to. If I miss a few articles from Tim Bray or Joel Spolsky, I’m fine with that; but if I miss a few from Languagehat I am going to make time to read them at some point in the future, I like the site that much, and not reading them soon is a false economy. Ditto, say, Maciej Cegłowski.

But, Literally, a Web Log or Michael Kaplan, I will only visit when I’m both short of things to do in work and other reading material, because eh, English usage is not really a primary area of interest for me, and MK has far too much Windows minutiæ –which I’m not that interested in–for me to be really enchanted. The important stuff from the regularly-updated sites, I find I learn about later anyway.

So I seem to have a broad two-position sort on the blogs I’m interested in, and yours is more subtle. .
